"La feria" is what you would call an open-air market, and there's one in Guadalupe every Saturday morning. Farmers from nearby parts of the country come and bring every type of fruit and vegetable you could imagine - and more! I don't know what half of the things are but I love going to la feria with Marta and/or Pepe to learn the names of different fruits and vegetables and to try different things. Here are some pictures from la feria yesterday.
"Don't be a donkey; don't park here" :) My host parents say that for the past 3 years the man that sells fish at the market asks about "Carolina del Norte" (me). How sweet! We visited him yesterday and he gave me some free ceviche. It was the first time I had eaten it. I looked it up online purposefully AFTER I ate it and it's a soup made with different types of fish cured in lime juice with other ingredients like cilantro, red pepper, etc. It was delicious! When I was here 3 years ago my host family said that they had never tried chocolate chip cookies before! I had to remedy that so I brought 2 packs with me from the States and we made 1 batch for the Campos family and 1 batch for my friends that we had dinner with last night. | A picture of me with my ceviche! So my friends from church asked us to dinner last night for wings and we said yes. Then they told us that we were going to Hooters to get the wings. Rachel and I had never been there before and I was shocked that my friends would but apparently they go all the time! I've surveyed most of my Christian friends here and the consensus is that it's a family-friendly place to go and they were surprised that we thought otherwise. Knowing them, that's been my biggest shock so far. But we did go in with them to help pay for the wings. |
My host dad and brother are both incredible pianists! My host dad had a gig at La Campiña, a country club around here and we all went with him to the restaurant there to have lunch and to hear him play. We had a great time! Afterward we came back to the house, ordered a pizza, and had the rest of the extended family come. Then my host brother Pepe Jr. played some Beatles songs while I and an aunt and cousin sang along.

My next post will be about our trip to Panama! :)
